Teaching
I have been teaching art to youth and adults in a variety of capacities since 2006. In 2010 I became a certificated teacher and have been a classroom art teacher ever since. I taught middle school for seven years, elementary for four years, and have been teaching high school art at The Center School (public alternative school) since 2021. I teach art because it saves lives and changes the world. Art is communication, expression, hope, and so much more.
I have a few art lessons on my YouTube channel. They are geared towards K-5 students but can be used and/or adapted for artists of any age. Art is for everyone—you don’t have to be “good at it” or an “expert” to give it a try.
Art Workshops, Classes, and Parties/Celebrations for Youth and/or Adults
I teach mixed-media encaustic painting and other mixed-media art workshops out of my studio on Beacon Hill in Seattle. Workshops are by request only. The focus of my workshop is to introduce the medium and allow participants to explore and practice techniques in a fun, relaxed, small-group environment. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow; this is a very forgiving art medium!
Please contact me to set up a private workshop for you and your group. In my studio, I have room for up to six people per workshop. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Read below for workshop descriptions; workshops can also be tailored to meet your needs.

Mixed-Media Encaustic Painting
Encaustic painting is a fun, experimental process that involves working with all kinds of materials- melted beeswax, wax pigment sticks, different sorts of papers and collage materials, paint, graphite, and whatever else you might want to try out… The possibilities are endless!
This workshop begins with a demonstration of techniques and possibilities. Then, we work hands-on, playing with materials, learning from our discoveries, and exploring layering, texture, color, and the awesome joy of making a “mistake.” We will move away from the stress-inducing idea of creating the perfect “masterpiece” and instead focus on enjoying the process and allowing it to lead us, intuitively, to where we need to be.
This workshop is open to people with any artistic background- including none at all! The only requirements are an open mind and a willingness to try out something that might be new to you. Returning participants are welcome as well.
Please email Janet to set up a workshop for you & your group at a time that works for you!
